Thailand! The land of exotic beauty, unrivalled sightseeing, and history dating back centuries. Today, Thailand is known more for its beaches, shopping districts, and fantastic cuisine, than in the past. The past glory of Thailand has to be seen to be believed. Grandiose temples, palaces, and other structures aside, the country is a huge attraction for tourists who love the beaches and the ocean alike.
A Touch of Royalty
Located in the Malay Peninsula, just 200kms south of the Thai capital, Hua Hin has always been the favorite holiday destination for the rich locals and developers backyard. Perhaps it is because of its gorgeous beaches, proximity to Bangkok, and Prachuap Khiri Khan that offers a range of excellent attractions such as national parks and ancient city relics, that Hua-Hin offers something to everyone.
While Bangkok, Phuket, Samui, etc have been in the limelight only since the past few decades, the fishing town of Hua-Hin has been the chosen place for visitors and Thai aristocracy since seven decades. Also known as the ‘City of Pure Gold,’ Hua-Hin is the land of spectral beauty…lively local markets, and the Royal Summer Residence Klai Kangwon Palace.
History and Tranformation of Hua-Hin
This famous beach resort town was once a sleepy fishing village with verdant forests and virgin white beaches. Today, it is a bustling and busy beach resort despite having a population of less than 85, 000 people.
But much before Hua-Hin got its name, some farmers moved from Phetchaburi Province towards the south in search of water after the severe drought of 1834. They stumbled upon this virgin, serene, and picture-perfect village with its talcum powder beaches and rows of limestone rocks. The farmers fell in love with the village and named it “Samore Riang” or the ‘rows of rocks.’
Hua-Hin and the Railway Connection
Many years later, in 1921, the state railway’s head, Prince Purachatra, built the first hotel, the Railway Hotel, near the beach there. King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) also fell in love with the spectacular beauty of the village after he visited it one time, and decided to build a summer palace right there. The royal palace was appropriately named as “Wang Klai Kang Won” or ‘Far from Worries'. Today, the Klai Kangwon Palace is the permanent residence of His Majesty the King of Thailand. His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phra Naresworarit named the beach next to his own palace as Hua Hin, thereby giving a new name to the town.
Till 1949, Hua-Hin was part of Pran Buri district, but after that it was elevated to the status of a district and became part of the Prachuap Khiri Khan province. And once the southern railway project was completed, Hua-Hin became well-connected to the rest of the country.
Hua-HinÂ’s Leisurely Journey
Hua-Hin has continued its leisurely journey as the most popular beach resort, the first choice of aristocracy, as well as the favored summer homes, golfing and angling destination for most of the rich locals as well as foreigners. And chances are it will do so for a long time to come.
